Goosanders in the 2017/18 Winter Period

Goosanders became rather prominent in Devon last winter, especially with the unusually large number of unusually confiding birds at Stover, which probably gave many people their best-ever views of this impressive duck. A more clandestine operation was the series of synchronised roost counts carried by observers creeping around various Devon sites at first light in an attempt to estimate the total number present in the county. In 2017/18 this peaked in January, with at least 200 birds roosting in Devon, and even more feeding if those flying west out of Wimbleball in Somerset ended up in Devon rivers.
